Gum Disease Treatment

Protect your gums and overall oral health with early diagnosis and care.

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease or gum infection, is a condition that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It can range from mild inflammation to severe damage of the gums and bone.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is often referred to as “Gum Disease” or “Gum Infection” and it is the term used to describe the inflammation of the gum and its supporting tissues.

Periodontal disease ranges from a simple gum inflammation (Gingivitis) to a serious destruction of the gum and supporting bone tissues (Periodontitis).
If the condition is severe enough, the involved teeth may be lost.

Periodontal disease is quite common and based on the research, about 50% of the population have some degrees of periodontal diseases and for adults 65 and older, the percentage increases to 70%.

What Causes Gum Disease?

The main cause of periodontal disease is bacteria present in dental plaque. Plaque is a sticky biofilm that forms on teeth and around gums.

When oral hygiene is not maintained, plaque hardens into tartar, which cannot be removed by brushing alone. This leads to further bacterial build-up and inflammation of the gums.

How can you prevent

How can you prevent?

Other than some aggressive forms of periodontal diseases, gum disease can be prevented by controlling bacteria in the mouth. This involves two major forms of care: home care and professional care. Home care includes maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and flossing once daily using the correct techniques. Professional care involves regular dental cleaning performed by a dentist, with 6-monthly cleanings generally recommended; however, for individuals with existing periodontal conditions, more frequent dental visits may be advised.

What is involved in a periodontal treatment?

Depending on the severity of the periodontal diseases, the treatment approaches are different. All periodontal treatments are aimed to deal with the gum infection.

Scale and Clean

When you visit your dentist in Windsor for a routine check-up and cleaning, you’re also getting basic periodontal care. Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar that brushing can’t.
Most cases of gingivitis (gum inflammation without bone loss) can be effectively treated with these regular dental cleanings.

Deep cleaning (Scale & Root Debridement)

Deep cleaning is often needed for periodontal disease with bone loss and deep gum pockets, as these areas can’t be cleaned properly at home.

The treatment involves numbing the gums and removing bacteria from deep pockets to reduce inflammation and help the gums reattach to the tooth roots.

Surgical approach

For advanced or deep-cleaning–resistant periodontal cases, surgery may be needed. The gums are opened to remove plaque and tartar, then cleaned, disinfected, and sutured for healing.

Medications or special mouthwashes may also be prescribed. Ongoing care and regular monitoring are essential for all periodontal treatments.
