At what age should my child first see a dentist?

We recommend a first visit around the time the first teeth appear, or by their first birthday, so we can monitor healthy development early.

How often should my child have a dental check-up?

For most children we suggest a check-up and clean every six months. Some children may need to be seen more often, and we'll let you know if that applies to your child.

Is my child eligible for the CDBS?

Children aged 2 to 17 whose family receives an eligible payment such as Family Tax Benefit Part A may qualify. We can check eligibility and the remaining balance for you.

Does CDBS cover the full cost of treatment?

CDBS covers a range of basic services up to a capped amount over two consecutive calendar years. We confirm your child's remaining balance and explain any costs before treatment.

Why do baby teeth matter if they fall out anyway?

Baby teeth help your child eat, speak and smile, and they hold space for the adult teeth coming through. Looking after them early supports healthy long-term development.

How do you help nervous children feel comfortable?

We keep each visit calm and friendly, explain everything simply, and focus on a positive experience so children feel safe and relaxed.

What happens at my child's first appointment?

We take time to get to know your child, gently examine their teeth and gums, and talk through anything we notice. The goal is a relaxed first visit that builds their confidence.

How can I help prevent cavities at home?

Brushing twice a day, helping with flossing, limiting sugary snacks and drinks, and keeping up regular check-ups all help protect your child's teeth between visits.

What should I do in a dental emergency?

Windsor sits directly south of Prahran. Chapel Street runs through both; the two stations are a single stop apart, and from the northern end of Windsor you can walk it.

Prahran Family Dental is on Commercial Road, near Prahran Market. Most of our Windsor patients are families, and most of them are here for the same reason: they want one practice that can see everybody, remember the history, and keep the whole household on a sensible schedule.

Getting here from Windsor

By train. Prahran is one stop north of Windsor on the Sandringham line, and Prahran station exits onto Greville Street, a short walk from Commercial Road.

By tram. Route 78 runs up Chapel Street through Windsor into Prahran. Route 72 runs along Commercial Road.

On foot. From the northern end of Windsor it is a genuine walk rather than a technical one, which is worth knowing if parking is the thing putting you off.

By car. Chapel Street north, then left onto Commercial Road. Metered street parking on and around Commercial Road, with time limits that vary block to block. For longer appointments, the Elizabeth Street Car Park (644 spaces, behind Prahran Market) or the 24-hour Prahran Square car park on Izett Street are more reliable.

The main reason Windsor families come to us is straightforward. Coordinating dental appointments across a household is tedious when everyone is at a different practice on a different cycle.

We book families together where we can, so a morning covers more than one person. Where children and adults are both due, we try to arrange those appointments back to back rather than across separate trips.

A routine check-up covers an examination of the teeth, gums and soft tissues, a clean, and X-rays where they are due. The point of doing it on a schedule is that most of what a dentist treats is far cheaper and far less involved when it is caught early. A small filling and a root canal are often the same problem at two different stages.

Children, and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule

Eligible children may be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, a Medicare programme that covers a capped amount of basic dental services over two calendar years. It covers examinations, cleans, X-rays, fillings and extractions. It does not cover orthodontics or cosmetic work.

Beyond the funding, the useful thing about starting early is that a child who has been to the dentist a dozen times without anything hurting is a very different patient at fifteen to one whose first visit was an emergency.

Second opinions

This comes up more often from Windsor than from anywhere else, so it is worth addressing directly.

If you have been given a treatment plan you are not sure about, you are welcome to book an appointment to have it looked at again. Bring whatever you already have. X-rays, a written quote, a treatment plan, photographs. The more we can see, the less needs repeating.

A second opinion appointment is an examination and a conversation about what the findings are and what the options look like. Sometimes it confirms what you were already told. Sometimes it puts a different option on the table. Either way, there is no obligation to have any treatment here afterwards, and you are free to take the information back to your own dentist.

Nobody should feel awkward asking. It is a normal part of making a decision about a significant piece of work.

If something goes wrong

Broken teeth, lost fillings and sudden pain do not schedule themselves. We keep time aside for emergency appointments, and one stop up the line is a short trip on the day it matters.

If your gums bleed when you brush, or have started to look different, that is worth an appointment sooner rather than later. Gum disease treatment is far simpler at the early stage than the late one.

Questions we get from Windsor families

Can we book the whole family on the same morning?

Usually, yes. Tell us when you book, and we will arrange the appointments together where the schedule allows.

My child is nervous. What happens?

The first appointment is kept short and simple. Counting teeth, a look around, a ride in the chair. Nothing is forced, and nothing is done that has not been explained first.

Can I bring X-rays from another practice?

Yes, and please do. Recent X-rays often mean we do not need to take new ones.

Do I need a referral for a second opinion?

No. Book it like any other appointment.

What if something happens outside your hours?

Call the practice and follow the instructions on the message. We do our best to accommodate patients in genuine pain outside standard hours where possible.
