Children's Dentistry in Prahran

Gentle, friendly dental care for growing smiles.

Children’s dentistry focuses on providing gentle and positive dental care for kids. At Prahran Family Dental, we aim to create a comfortable experience that helps children feel relaxed while building healthy habits from an early age.

Why Children’s Dental Care Matters

Children’s dentistry is dedicated to the oral health of infants, children, and teenagers. It includes preventive care, routine check-ups, and treatments designed to support healthy growth and development of teeth.

Regular dental visits help detect early signs of cavities, alignment issues, and gum problems. By addressing these concerns early, we can ensure better long-term dental health.
At Prahran Family Dental, we focus on making each visit calm and friendly so children feel safe and confident during their dental care.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

Eligible children can receive Medicare-funded dental care through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). The scheme covers basic services such as examinations, cleaning, fillings and extractions, up to a capped amount over two consecutive calendar years.

Your child may be eligible if they are aged 0 to 17 for at least one day in the calendar year and your family receives an eligible payment such as Family Tax Benefit Part A. Medicare notifies most eligible families at the start of each year.

  • Medicare-funded care for eligible children
  • Covers check-ups, cleaning, fillings and extractions
  • We check your child's eligibility and balance for you
At Prahran Family Dental we can confirm your child's eligibility and explain exactly what is covered before any treatment begins.

Treatment Procedure

Patient smiling at dentist appointment

A child’s dental visit begins with a gentle examination to assess the condition of their teeth and gums. This helps identify any early signs of decay or development concerns.

Preventive treatments such as cleaning and fluoride application may be performed to protect the teeth and maintain oral hygiene.

If treatment is required, we explain everything in a simple and reassuring way to ensure your child feels comfortable throughout the process.

Our goal is to create a positive experience that encourages children to maintain good dental habits.

Children's Dentistry FAQs

At what age should my child first see a dentist?
We recommend a first visit around the time the first teeth appear, or by their first birthday, so we can monitor healthy development early.
How often should my child have a dental check-up?
For most children we suggest a check-up and clean every six months. Some children may need to be seen more often, and we'll let you know if that applies to your child.
Is my child eligible for the CDBS?
Children aged 0 to 17 whose family receives an eligible payment such as Family Tax Benefit Part A may qualify. We can check eligibility and the remaining balance for you.
Does CDBS cover the full cost of treatment?
CDBS covers a range of basic services up to a capped amount over two consecutive calendar years. We confirm your child's remaining balance and explain any costs before treatment.
Why do baby teeth matter if they fall out anyway?
Baby teeth help your child eat, speak and smile, and they hold space for the adult teeth coming through. Looking after them early supports healthy long-term development.
How do you help nervous children feel comfortable?
We keep each visit calm and friendly, explain everything simply, and focus on a positive experience so children feel safe and relaxed.
What happens at my child's first appointment?
We take time to get to know your child, gently examine their teeth and gums, and talk through anything we notice. The goal is a relaxed first visit that builds their confidence.
How can I help prevent cavities at home?
Brushing twice a day, helping with flossing, limiting sugary snacks and drinks, and keeping up regular check-ups all help protect your child's teeth between visits.
What should I do in a dental emergency?
If your child has a knocked-out tooth, swelling or dental pain, call us on (03) 9533 2288 as soon as possible so we can guide you and arrange to see them.
