What is a Dental Emergency?
Severe tooth pain that is persistent or intense often indicates an underlying issue such as infection or nerve damage and requires immediate dental attention to prevent further complications.
A broken or knocked-out tooth, usually caused by injury or trauma, should be treated as soon as possible to improve the chances of saving or restoring the tooth.
Swelling or signs of infection, such as an abscess, can indicate a serious dental condition that may spread if left untreated, making prompt professional care essential.

Common Dental Emergencies
Toothache
Broken or chipped tooth
Knocked-out tooth
Lost filling or crown
Dental abscess
Swelling or bleeding

What to Do in an Emergency
- Knocked-out adult tooth: Hold the crown, avoid touching the root, rinse briefly with milk or saline if dirty, and gently place it back in the socket only if it fits easily. Otherwise keep it in milk or saline and seek urgent dental care. Do not put a baby tooth back in.
- Broken tooth: Rinse with water, cover sharp edges if possible, save any fragment in milk or saline, and arrange a dental assessment.
- Toothache or swelling: Rinse gently with warm salt water and use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief. Do not place aspirin on the gum.
- Bleeding: Apply steady pressure with clean gauze. If bleeding is heavy or does not settle, seek urgent care.

Emergency dental care: common questions
Can I get a same-day emergency appointment?
Call (03) 9533 2288 and tell us what happened. We will check the earliest available appointment. Same-day care depends on availability. An online booking request is not confirmed until our team responds.
What should I do if an adult tooth is knocked out?
Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. If dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or saline. Gently place it back in the socket only if it fits easily; otherwise keep it in milk or saline and seek urgent dental care.
Should I put a knocked-out baby tooth back?
No. Do not reinsert a baby tooth, as this may harm the adult tooth developing underneath. Contact a dentist promptly and tell us the child’s age and how the injury happened.
What if a tooth is cracked or chipped?
Rinse your mouth with water, avoid chewing on that side, and save any fragment in milk or saline. A dentist can assess whether the tooth needs repair and explain the options.
What if I have severe toothache or facial swelling?
Contact a dentist promptly, especially if pain is worsening or swelling is present. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek may help. If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, or spreads around the eye or neck, seek emergency medical care.
What if my filling or crown has come loose?
Keep the crown or filling if you have it, avoid chewing on the affected tooth, and arrange an assessment. Do not use household glue to reattach it.
What happens at an emergency appointment?
The dentist will ask about your symptoms, examine the area, and may recommend an X-ray. Treatment depends on the diagnosis. The team can explain the options and expected costs before care.
